Scientists in South Africa are investigating if a pilchard herpesvirus (PHV) is responsible for a recent mass die-off of sardines along the country's west and south coasts, with preliminary findings linking high PHV levels to the dead fish. The sardine deaths have also disrupted operations at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, which had to reduce power after dead fish clogged its seawater intake.
