MeitY Consultation Discusses Social Media Rules for Children

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is collaborating with the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Initiative for Critical and Emerging Technologies (I4C), and social media companies to develop a social media code of conduct protecting children online. The August 20 consultation examined age gating, platform regulation, and legal frameworks, concluding that a blanket social media ban for children is ineffective and advocating safety-by-design approaches and further longitudinal research into Indian children's internet use.
