SpaceX is systematically acquiring mobile spectrum—most recently via the EchoStar deal ($17bn for 65 MHz) and targeted AWS 3 auction bids—to move Starlink from satellite-only broadband toward a hybrid terrestrial-satellite telecommunications platform independent of carrier partnerships.

The Wire takeaway

If you build for AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile, you're now competing against SpaceX for your customer's most critical asset—spectrum—and your vendor relationships are no longer exclusive. The auction in July 2027 is the inflection point: SpaceX doesn't need to outbid carriers to win, just enough to force them to pay more, and that cost hits your margins first.
