China Three Gorges has connected the first turbines of its 2 GW Qingzhou V & VII offshore wind farm in Guangdong to the grid, using the world's first large-scale ±500 kV flexible HVDC transmission system for offshore wind. The project features 163 turbines over 70 kilometres offshore, with advanced subsea cable technology and is expected to generate 6 TWh annually, reducing around 5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

◆ ◆ The Wire takeaway

The breakthrough in HVDC offshore transmission in China opens a new opportunity for wind farm developers to scale capacity and cut grid connection costs. You can now expect faster approvals and more technically ambitious offshore projects to become viable in this market.
